Greta Eveline Soyland, Newport News, VA.

Greta Eveline Soyland, 76, passed away on Tuesday, March 11th, 2008 in Newport News. Born in Preston, Cuba, on September 17, 1931, she was the daughter of Ingebreth and Eveline Soyland. She moved with her family to Newtonville, MA at the age of 17, where she attended Boston University and was a member of Pi Beta Phi women's fraternity.

After marriage, she lived in Wilmington, DE where she remained for over fifty years. While in Wilmington, she was a homemaker, who gave generously of her time to many volunteer projects, including Head Start, teaching Spanish to the Wilmington Police Force and handicapped rights.

Greta was a member of the First Unitarian Church in Wilmington, DE. She was known for being a storyteller and published many short stories in "HOY en Delaware". She drew her inspiration for storytelling from her childhood in Cuba and forever considered herself a Cuban at heart. She moved to Newport News in 2005, where she lived at Mennowood Retirement Community in Newport News.

Greta is survived by her brother, Eric Soyland of Driggs, ID; her son, Christopher Fynsk  and wife Edith of Aberdeen, Scotland; her daughter, Donna Briede and husband Jan-Willem of Yorktown, VA; her two grandchildren Chloe Briede and Gabriel Fynsk.

A memorial service will be held on April 9, at 7 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the Peninsula, 415 Youngs Mill Lane in Newport News.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to LINK of Hampton Roads, 10413 Warwick Blvd. Newport News, VA 23601. Arrangements are by Weymouth Funeral Home.
